James McDowell (1820--1862) and Mary Glover (1817--1900)
The choice to leave one's native country and re-locate to another far away could not be a simple one. Parting from family and friends for parts unknown must be daunting. However, when times are dire that choice is possible made easier by the hope of something better in a new place.
Many of our ancestors made these decisions because life had become to difficult to survive where they lived. Times in Ireland were becoming more and more difficult due to the oppression, not only of the Irish Catholics, but also those who were not Church of England by faith. Unable to believe freely many Irish Protestants left for America where they believed they would be free of the persecution of England.
It would appear that the McDowells could have been such a family. Had they stayed a year or so longer they would have been grouped into the influx of Irish fleeing the potato famine which stretched from 1845 to 1852.

**While working on the McDowell family I have had a great deal of help from others who have supplied pictures and information to help me put the family together. My connection is with Jane McDowell wife of Hugh Bell but there were many other connections between the families. I would like to thank Sue Barbeau and Marjorie O'Handley for their generous contributions and pictures. If anyone would like to connect with them you can comment on my blog or connect by clicking the following link to Sue's FB page.**

Mary Glover's Family
James McDowell came to Canada with his wife Mary (Glover) in or around 1844 and settled in Peel, Ontario. It would appear that Mary's family also relocated near them as well as her brother John. The 1851 census has Mary's parents and her brother John living in Wellington County, Ontario. The family is Presbyterian in faith and William Glover is sixty-five years of age and still works as a weaver. Elizabeth is sixty-two and John is working the farm. Mary is not present on the census with the family.(1)
The census for 1861 shows William and Elizabeth alone both ten years older but in the same place. Here we see that William notes the year of his marriage to Elizabeth as 1820.(2)
Elizabeth died in 1866, but in the next census we find William now eighty living with is son John his wife and family of three boys and one girl.(3) In the 1881 William is still with his son and family now increased to seven children.(4) He remains with them until his death.
William lives to be ninety-eight years of age succumbing to age in the end.(5) He is buried in the Ashgrove Cemetery.(6) Are these the right parents for Mary or will more research prove otherwise.
To date I have no concrete information on James McDowell's parents at this time but time will tell. Several others are had at work to uncover new information every day.

JaMes McDowell (1813--1862)
Born in Killinchy, Down, Northern Ireland, James McDowell left his homeland to find a better life in America. He arrive in the New York from Ireland on the ship "Themis" in June of 1844 at the age of 24.(1)
James settled in the Toronto Township, Peel County, Ontario. His wife and first three children born in Ireland would follow. He is shown to work as a labourer in the 1861 census for the area and is with his wife Mary Glover and nine children.(2) The children living at home at that time range in age from twenty to two years of age, consisting of five girls and four boys. The two eldest are absent from the census, William and Samuel. One of the girls is noted as Susan, but I believe her to be Jane as she is born the same year and Jane is not mentioned in the census.
In 1871 James has passed and Mary is left a widow at age fifty.(3)

Mary GLover (1817--1900)
Mary like her husband James immigrated from Northern Ireland to settle in the New World. According to one of my colleagues she arrived on "The Virginian" from Liverpool to New York, Jul 15, 1844 shortly after James. The actual list is not available to see so I am unable to see if her three children born in Ireland are on the same ship.(1)
Mary appears with the family on the 1861 census with her family as mother of nine children listed on the census, the youngest just two years old.(2)
In the next census she is present as a widow of fifty, six children still at home. James is the eldest at twenty and Alexander just ten.(3) By 1881 only three children remain at home with her but there is also an Elizabeth who at fourteen, could not be one of her children and therefore must be a grandchild.(4)
Mary died June 19, 1897 in Georgetown from a bowel hemorrhage at the age of seventy-eight.(5)

Children of James McDowell and Mary Glover
Elizabeth "Eliza" (1840-- )Born May 10 1840 • Ballybollin, County Antrim, Ireland. Very little is know about Eliza. She does appear on the 1861 Census but is not present thereafter.(1)
Margaret Anne (1841--1928)
More is available about Margaret Anne. She was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland and came to Canada as a young child. Settling with the family in Peel County,(1) she grew up with many brothers and sisters and was no doubt quite capable as a mother and wife when she married William McCarthy, 29 Mar 1867.(2) She and William would have eight children from their marriage: James Paul(1867--1949), Mary E (1868--1943), Dorthea Ann (1871--1872), Sarah J. (1973--1951), Margaret (1876--1966), Robert John (1878--1961), William Alexander (1880--1883) and Edith Mabel (1885--1966).(3) Margaret raised her family in Georgetown, Ontario with her husband William. William died November 9 1912.(4) Margaret out lived him by twenty-six years and died November 14 1928.(5) They are both buried in the Greenwood Cemetery.(6) |

William (1843--1921)
William, born in County Antrim, Ireland, the last of James children to be born in the home country. He arrived in Canada as a young boy and grew up surrounded by many siblings.
William can be found in all the Census for Canada from 1861*,(1) to 1911, first in Streetsville working for a local Innkeeper, (this is not certain), then as a head of his own family (2),(3),(4),(5),(6).
William began his manhood working as a labourer on a farm and eventually having his own farm in Toronto Township, where he would raise his of ten children. James, Susannah, William Henry, George Alfred, Hugh Bell, Evalina, Annie Florence, Lillie May and twins Albert Howard and Ernest Austin.
William is one of my ties to the McDowell family. He married Jane Bell, daughter of Hugh Bell and Susannah Dunbar. Jane and William were married February 19 1867.(7)
He would farm the land all his life until he retired and moved to Toronto. This would have been after 1911 and before his death. He appeared to be a good and generous man, at one point having his mother-in-law live with him in her fragile years. She died in his home.
William died in March 14 1921,(8) from a dialated heart caused by Rheumatic Fever, contracted in December of 1920. He died at his home in Toronto. William is buried in the Prospect Cemetery in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.(9)

Samuel McDowell (1845--1903)
Samuel McDowell second son of James and Mary was born July 24 1845 in Churchville, Peel County, Ontario.(1)
He married Margaret Jane Graham daughter of William Graham and his wife Margaret Hammond, October 28 1868 in Brampton.(2) At the time he was just twenty-two and Margaret eighteen. William Bell was the witness at their wedding and he at William's to his sister Jane. It was a double wedding.(record above)
Samuel and Margaret had five children over the next eight years. Their first child Martha Jane lived less than a year. Her sister Emma born the same year (twin) lived to adulthood. The other children were Mary M. James Alexander and Jessie Adlet.(3)
He worked as a labourer during his life first on farms and later as a day labourer. Not always an easy life to raise a family.
Samuel died July 16 1903 from peritonitis.(4) His wife Margaret Jane died in 1923.(5)
He is buried in the Churchville Cemetery in 1903 along with his wife and two of his daughters.(6)

Jane (Susan) (1847-- 1877)
Jane is my direct contact with the McDowell family. She is identified by some as Susan but in all reality she went by the name Jane. These details can make it difficult to sometimes connect a relative to their family.
Most likely her name was Susan Jane but she used her second name.
A story by Lillie McDowell, her sister identifies to her as Jane. Their are to many co-incidences to make it otherwise.

James McDowell (1850--1916)
James was born in Streetsville, Ontario and would nearby his entire life.(1) According to his obituary, he married Fannie Russell July 11 1875(1) and over the next twenty years the marriage would produce eleven children; five boys and six girls all of which survived their father.(2)(3)(4)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(13)(14). The couple had one child born in 1879 who died within days of her birth.(5)(6)
James lived and farmed on the fourth line,(1) in Esquesing and it is here the family made their home.
Shortly before he passed he had suffered some heart trouble and succumbed to it at just sixty-six years of age. He left behind his wife of many years and four children still living at home. Most of the family remained in the area, however his namesake moved to Manitoba to homestead.(1)
James was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Sons of Scotland died April 3 1916,(1) just a couple of months before his son William George had just enlisted in the army and left for overseas.(15)
Fannie survived her husband by many years and died December 22 1939. Both James and Fannie are buried in the Limehouse Cemetery,(16)(17)

Mary McDowell (1853--1935)
Mary, the next in the family was born three years after her brother James. Also like her brother, she would remain in Esquesing as the wife of a local farmer. She married George Wrigglesworth, son of George and Isabella (France), December 6 1876 in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada.(1) George like Mary was from a large family of twelve children and like Mary he was somewhere in the middle.
They would have five children from their almost sixty years together.(2)(3)(4)
In 1921 the couple now empty nesters had given up farming and lived on Edith Street in Georgetown only a few blocks from where my great-grandfather and his wife raised his boys. They had a thirty-nine year old lodger living with them by the name of Edith.
George died in January of 1934 in Georgetown, Ontario from heart problems.(5)
Mary died of pneumonia, at the home of her son the following year Octobers 14 1835.(6) Both she and George are buried at the Greenwood Cemetery.(7)

Sarah McDowell (1855--1932)
Sarah was born in Peel County in April of 1855 according to several records. She appears in the 1861 Census in that area as a seven year old.(1) February 12 1879 she married Leonard Brown, a farmer from Chinguacousy, son of William and Hannah Brown. The ceremony took place in Georgetown.(2)
The couple had their first two children in Ontario,(3)(4) before moving to South Dakota where another child is born.(5) From there they moved to Minnesota, and here they settle and have two more children.(6)(7)(8)
In 1894 tragedy strikes the family and Sarah and Leonard lose three children to diptheria Elbert 5, and Edith 9 and Laura 11. The deaths occur over a period of three days.(9)(10)(11) That same year, in December, a discovery of a cure for the disease was made available.
"On Nov. 26, The Times reported that Behring’s “diphtheria anti-toxine” had been commercially imported for the first time, and a lengthy description of the substance and its manufacture appeared on Dec. 9, 1894. That same day a brief article on Page 10 reported that in a diphtheria epidemic in New Rochelle, N.Y., “there have been several quick cures by the use of antitoxine, the new remedy, and the new cases will be treated with it.” By this time, serum was being produced from horse blood in New York City."(12)
All three children are buried in the Troy Cemetery in Pipestone County, Minnesota.(13)
Sarah and Leonard left Minnesota and returned to Canada after 1900 as they appear in the 1900 Census for the United States.(14) By 1906 we find the family in Assiniboia East, Saskatchewan with her husband and three remaining children.(15)
They appear again in the census for that area in 1916. Leonard is seventy and Sarah fifty-nine.16) Two children still remain at home. Again in 1921 the census finds the family on their farm in West Carlyle, Estavan, Saskatchewan.(17) Leonard is still farming alongside two of his sons.
Leonard died in 1928 having farmed all his life. Sarah died four years later in 1932. Both are buried in West Carlyle Cemetery,
Carlyle, Estevan Census Division, Saskatchewan, Canada.(18)

Another Child?
There is mention of another child Margaret McDowell. Apparently Sarah had a child out of wedlock with a married man and relative of the family. The girl was adopted by another family. I have no proof of this other than that of an ancestor of the girl. If I am able to vet the story I will include it in Sarah's life.(19)

Alexander McDowell (1858--1912)
Alexander the last of James and Mary's children was born in Churchville, Esquesing Twp, Halton County, Ontario, October 4 1861.(1) He
married Sarah Whiteside, daughter of John and Rebecca (Charlton) February 16, 1887.(3) Rebecca was just eighteen when she married Alexander, twenty-three and working as a farmer.
June 24 1889 the couple had their only child Norman.(4) They continued to live in Georgetown, Ontario until sometime after 1906 and before 1911.(5)(6) The 1911 census finds the family in Whitewater, Manitoba.(7)
