Over the past few years I have uncovered more information about Emma Turner, wife of Gideon and mother of his thirteen children. She was quite possibly the daughter of Joseph Turner (1813-1892) and Mary Martha Covey (1814-1890). Emma was born in England in 1840 before she and her family immigrated to Canada. During 1851 Cholera swept through England wiping out sometimes whole families. I do not know when Emma arrived in Canada but it was before 1858. She married Gideon Turner Ostrom in Whitby October 14th 1858. It mentions she was from Clark Township but I have not located the family for the 1851census. Emma would give Gideon thirteen children during their marriage of twenty-seven years. Margaret Ellen 1855, Simeon Charles 1859, Martha Turner 1860, Lucinda Frederick 1861, Elizabeth Mary 1863, Emma Jane 1866, Joseph Henry 1868, Matilda 1870, Annnie Alberta 1874, George Maxwell 1875, Elura Lillian 1877, William Albert 1878 and Melinda Lora 1879. All of their children grew to adulthood. Some moved away but they all married. Emma Turner died on March 10, 1885, in Northumberland, Ontario, when she was 45 years old. She had suffered with stomach ulcers for more than two years. She is buried in Roseneath, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada. She is buried across from the family farm in the Centenary Cemetery.

* There seems to be some confusion as to the parents of Emma. Many list John Turner and Mary Ann Land. Any help here would be appreciated.
Margaret Ellen Ostrom was the eldest daughter of Gideon Turner Ostrom and Emma Turner. She was born in Clarke Township September 5 1855, but only baptised in Otonabee, Peterborough County according to her baptismal registration in 1871. I cannot find the family in the 1861 Census. Her baptisim was also performed in Otonabee where the family was living by Rev J Kines The family is present in the census for 1871 living in Alnwick, Northumberland County not far from Roseneath. She married Zaccheus White in December of 1874 near her family homestead in Alnwick. Zaccheus was a lumberman and a sawyer and together they had a family of twelve children: Jane Ethel 1875, Aileen1877, Emma Gertrude 1878, Alice Edna 1880, Zaccheus 1882, Asa 1884, Nora 1886, Charles 1887, Ella 1889,, Stanley 1890, Catherine 1892 and David 1894. Sometime after 1901 the family moved from Alnwick Township to Lakefield, Ontario. Zaccheus died from Strychnine poisoning in 1905 in Lakefield and was buried int the Hillside Cemetery in Douro Township. Ellen lived another five years and died in 1910, in Lakefield, Ontario. She is buried in the Hillside Cemetery, Douro Township alongside her husband.

Elizabeth Mary Ostrom (1863 - 1926) -- John Reynolds (1868 - 1962)
Born February 5 1863 in Otonabee Township, Peterborough County according to the Wesleyan Methodist Baptismal Register. Like several of her brothers and sisters she was baptised March 1 1871 by Rev J Kine. She is the name just above in the image for Emma Jane below. Elizabeth was just eighteen when she married John Reynolds a ploughman from Haldimand township, Northumberland County. The wedding took place in Grafton, Ontario the 18th of October 1881. The couple had three children from their union, William, Emma and Wallace. Elizabeth was widowed before 1901. She was living in Oxford County in the 1901 Census with her three children and working as a charwoman In 1902 Elizabeth moved to Michigan with her children. Some of her family were there so perhaps it was to be close to one of them. In the census of 1910 she was the landlord of a rooming house with seven lodgers and one servant. She died in Highland Park, Michigan from chronic myocarditis April 24th 1926.

Emma Jane Ostrom (1866 - 1900) Charles Wesley Hazard 1865 - 1901)
It would almost appear that Gideon and Emma waited until they had a brood of children before they decided to baptise them. Perhaps they were not as inclined toward religion, or maybe the area they lived in was not as accessible to a minister. Whatever the reason Emma Jane was like many of the others not baptised until March 1 1871 by the same minister that baptised many of her siblings. She was however born May 26 1966 in Otonabee Township, Peterborough County. Charles was living in Bowmanville with his family and working as a cabinet maker in the year 1881, whereas Emma Jane was living with her family in Alnwick Township. The two were married in Grafton, Ontario May 25 1889. Emma died in February 25 1900 at the age of thirty-three in Woodstock, Ontario, from cancer of the bowels. I have not found her in the 1891 Census but it would appear she was living with her sister Mary Elizabeth at the time of her death. I am wondering if their marriage had been a tumultous one. I found a document proving that Charles spent at least a short jail sentence for disturbing the peace suggesting he might have had a volitile temprement. It appears the family may also have moved around somewhat during their short lives. Charles a year later October 2nd in Peterborough, at only thirty-six years of age. He is listed as married, making me wonder if he was even aware of Emma Jane's death. They couple had no children.

Matilda Ostrom (1870 - 1956) -- John Alexander Kelly ( 1871 - 1942)
Matilda was the eighth child in Gideon and Emma's marriage. Born at the family farm in Alnwick Township May 28 1870. She was the last of the children I have found to be baptised by Rev J Kine. Like most young ladies of the time she remained at the farm until she married. Matilda married John Alexander Kelly a young compositor (typesetter) from Port Hope. They were married in Toronto in July 17 1891. John was able to provide a good life for the family. He started working to the Toronto Star when it was in its infancy and later served as Secretary Treasurer of the Toronto Typographical Union for eleven years. They would remain in Toronto all their married life and raise their five children in the metropolis. Those children were Emma Jane 1892, Margaret Matilda 1894, Nelson Alfred 1896, Hilda Ruth 1898, and John William 1899. Matilda was buried in the Prospect Cemetery in Toronto. Matilda died July 12 1956 fourteen yeas after the death of her husband. They along with daughter Hilda are buried in Prospect Cemetery in Toronto.

Elura Lilly Ostrom ( 1877 - 1958) -- William Lewis Laidley (1860 - 1942)
Elura Lillian Ostrom was born on January 26, 1877, in Northumberland, Ontario, to Emma Turner and Gideon Turner Ostrom. It would appear the she used her middle name at first as Lillie and later Lillian. Lilly was only eight when she lost her mother, a difficult time for a young girl. She married William Lewis Laidley in Hastings, Ontario, on February 19, 1894, when she was 17 years old. Their first three children Fanny 1895, Lewis 1896 and Edna Elsie May 1898, were born in Norwood, Ontario. The last two Louis Maxwell 1906 and Kenneth 1919 were born in Peterborough, Ontario. Lillie and her husband moved to Medicine Hat, Saskatchewan for a short while and can be found in the 1911 census for that area. They did return before the birth of Kenneth. Perhaps after the loss of their eldest son Lewis they longed for home and decided to return. Elura Lillian Ostrom died on January 23, 1958, in Peterborough, Ontario, when she was 80 years old. She had been a widow for over fifteen years. Both William and Lillian are buried in Little Lake Cemetery in Peterborough. I have yet to find their graves.

William Albert Ostrom (1878 -1940) -- Gladys Burns (1895 - 1968)
William Albert Ostrom was born on July 18, 1878, in Northumberland, Ontario, to Emma Turner and Gideon Turner Ostrom. He was the last son of Gideon and Emma born when they were nearing fifty and forty respectively. William would remain on the farm with his father they moved in with the Valeau family in the same county and worked at farm labour. He remained with his father until his death in 1902 at which point he left for Manitoba to make his way in the world. In 1914 He married Gladys Parkes Burns and they moved farther west to San Francisco, California. They couple two children, Bernice L 1916 and William A 1918. William applied for the draft between 1917 and 1918. It is possible that he served even though he was already 38 with a wife and two children. He was described as short and stout with light brown hair and grey eyes. He applied for a job as a Jutney driver. His occupation in life was a chauffeur. I found a document with William listed as a passenger on the ship the Miyako dated October 1923, but I am unaware of why he was there. William died in 1940 on April 17th in San Francisco and is buried in Cypress Lawn Cemetery, Colma san Mateo, California. Gladys died eighteen years later in Monterey, California.

Melinda Lora "Millie" Ostrom (1879 - 1940) -- Charles Peter Bound (1865)
Melinda Lora Ostrom was born on November 20, 1879, in Northumberland, Ontario, to Emma Turner, age 39, and Gideon Turner Ostrom, age 48. Other than her birth certificate all other information I have found on her refers to Millie. Her mother Emma passed away on March 10, 1885, in Northumberland, Ontario, at the age of 45, leaving six year old Millie and several other young siblings. Millie married Charles in Casteleton, Ontario, sometime between 1895 and 1900. He was fifteen years her senior. They remained in Northumberland County, settling in Seymour Township, near Meyersburg. Her son Charles Peter passed away on December 25, 1918, in Morganston, Ontario, at the age of 18. Millie and Charles had one child, named Charles Peter born June 11, 1900. Charles Peter passed away on December 25, 1918, in Morganston, Ontario, at the age of 18 from pneumonia caused by the Spanish Flu. They adopted a you boy George Arthur Metcalfe and raised him as their own. I do not have a death for Millie but do know she is buried in the Cramahe Hill Cemetery in Morganstan. Citations
