This last week has been a very productive week. I have been perusing the Halton newspapers. This is an absolute wealth of information. In fact any old newspapers are. I learned a lot about my Ryder family and extended family along the way. I also re-hooked up with a cousin who lives in the area of my ancestors and she is a very willing and helpful source. In fact many people searching out their own families are willing to help each other and it is for us to take advantage of the help they offer. In return we may have something to share with them we did not even know we had. If not them, then there is certainly someone else who may need what we have. In the old Halton newspapers, which are so kindly available on line for us to search I learned about a fire that caused my Ryders to move away from their town and on to another. Why they chose where they went I am not sure but I have a lead. I discovered many old ads for my great-grandfather’s trade and also much about the successful carriage business he ran for many years in Acton. One ad read as seen here in the article. I also, quite by accident, learned that he was nominated for Reeve one year but declined. I read about a shooting of a niece and the case that ensued. All of this is so fascinating to a genealogical sleuth. Next I started shuffling through old papers and research I have gathered over the years. Another wealth of knowledge. Old newspaper clippings sent to me by my cousin that described in detail the death of one of the James William “Billy” Ryder eldest son of my great-grandfather James Ryder who became well known as the owner of the Vendome Hotel in Sarnia. I think at the time I read it but had not realized what use it would be in years to come. *Perhaps your area offers a similar program. If so let me know and I will post the link in my blog so others can profit. Here is the one for Halton
